Bottle Care
How do I Sterilize My Bottles?
Cleaning:
Silica sand will be provided as long as the following directions
( Steps 1 thru 7) are followed.
1. Deposit one half-cup of Silica Sand into 5 Gallon bottle. Use
less in 2 and 3 gallon bottles.
2. Add one-half to two tablespoons of ordinary household
bleach to each bottle. The most 5 gallon bottles and less in
smaller bottles.
3. Add three to five cups of tap water.
4. Tightly secure bottle cap. Shake, rotate and slosh the sand,
water and bleach on all interior surfaces until all visible
deposits are loosened. In most instances, 2 to 4 minutes o
sloshing is sufficient.
5, Fill bottle with tap water and let sit for one hour - NO
LONGER.
6. Empty and thoroughly rinse with tap water
7. Let bottle air dry with cap removed. This is only time caps
should be left off bottles. It allows fumes from the sterilization
solution to evaporate.
Caution:
Do not sterilize caps; the soft liners will retain the bleach and
shed taste into your water after sterilizing. Use one for
covering during sterilizing; do not use this cap again for other
use.
Sterilization only:
Silica sand is not required if there are no signs of visible build
up of bacteria. Steps 2 through 8 will sterilize bottles.
Follow instruction 2 through 8. For final rinse at Service Area,
use no more than one quart of water - no rinsing of exterior
of bottles is permitted. Please help us keep the Service Area
clean and dry so that we all don’t track water into our cars
and trucks.
Each bag of provided Silica Sand is sufficient to clean at least
4 5-gallon bottles and more of your 2 and 3 gallon bottles. If
you have any questions please ask an attendant.
